Norm Schachter
Norm Schachter was an English teacher when he began officiating local games in Redlands, CA. After serving in the Marines during World War II, he resumed teaching and coaching in Los Angeles, officiating high school and college football, basketball, and baseball games.
Norm’s NFL career began in 1954. He refereed three Super Bowls (I, V, and X) and 11 championship games, including the “Ice Bowl” championship game between the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers in 1967. After his retirement, he continued working with the NFL; he edited the league rule book, helped write the officials’ manual, penned weekly exams for officiating crews, and mentored new officials.
