Associate Professor of Painting Katarina Riesing has second solo show, “SHE SHED,” at Asya Geisberg Gallery, in New York City

The title of the show refers to the female counterpart to “man cave,” a space in which a woman can be herself. Reflecting on Riesing’s art, the Asya Geisberg Gallery writes: “Where earlier pieces cropped body parts and pushed them to the frame edge in order to play with the intersection of the sexy and the grotesque, Riesing’s new works on silk focus on the body submerged in its surroundings.”

Viewers may also sense in Reising's art echoes of The Yellow Wallpaper, by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. According to the Gallery: “The figures in Riesing’s newest works either fight to emerge or purposefully camouflage themselves. Patterns and veils, some painted in dye and others carefully stitched, form a mysterious plane. Are the patterns tattooed onto skin, or have the women somehow slipped behind reality? In The Yellow Wallpaper, a woman confined to bed rest becomes both entranced and repulsed by the wallpaper of her room, and sees a figure at night behind the pattern, emerging only to disappear again.

Riesing, a faculty member in Alfred University's School of Art and Design + Performing Arts Division, joined Alfred University in 2014. In 2020 her show "Razor Burn" opened at the Asya Geisberg Gallery, and she has exhibited in numerous other venues, including the Downtown Library Gallery, in Madison, WI, and the Seligmann Center for the Arts, in Chester, NY.
